Cats are so commonplace that we scarcely look at what they do and why they do it, but cat behaviour is quite an interesting topic really, particularly for cat owners and animal lovers.

Cat behaviour is usually taken to mean that of domestic cats, although they do share some characteristics with their larger wild relatives.

A cat’s behaviour largely depends on whether it is a solitary cat or one of several in a household. Cats are usually solitary animals only coming together to mate, although they will usually co-exist with other cats in a house, particularly if they met when they were young or those that were introduced were young.

You may get problems of territorialism if you attempt to introduce an older cat into a house, where another cat has been living for a time. This is similar to large cats, which have their hunting ground that they patrol and delineate with urine and faeces every day. Male cats sometimes do this at home, much to the annoyance of their owners.

Rubbing has a similar meaning. A cat rubs with scent glands on its face to mark something as its own, especially territory, which is all cats really care about except food.

Kneading or knitting is another common trait in household cats, although it is not really well understood.

One theory goes that domestic cats stay juveniles, never really growing up, so kneading is reminiscent of kneading its mother’s teats to encourage the flow milk. Others say that it is reminiscent of flattening grass to make a bed, but this does not seem to explain the ecstasy that cats seem to get from kneading.

We like to hear our cats purr because we see it as a sign of joy, but is it? Well, it almost certainly is, but it probably comes from the fact that cats are born blind and, like most infants, fairly stupid, so the sound of mum purring almost certainly attracts the kittens to her for a feed. The ‘memory’ of this happy event almost certainly triggers purring in adult cats.

When a cat arches its back, it is probably signalling to its assailant that it is bigger than they think it is. It is also an attack posture. With its back arched, a cat can rear up in order to claw a taller adversary, but it can also jump or run, whichever action is apposite. The hissing goes with arching to deter the antagonist.

Cats do not have a wide vocal range and, being nocturnal hunters, they have developed a sort of ‘eye language’. For example, if a cat is happy, it’s eyes dilate – a bit like when we look at their loved ones.

However, it also occurs in cats while they are hunting, which might mean either that they enjoy that activity or that they have to get as much light as possible to see by.

Bedding is very important for a dog, especially a puppy which has just been taken away from its mother. In fact, if you can arrange it, it is a good idea to leave a blanket with your puppy when it is still with its mother and siblings, that way the blanket will remind him of home, which will be a big comfort to it in its early days of loneliness.

The best material to use for your blanket is wool. Wool is absorbent and so retains some moisture and smells, which will help the animal feel at more home. Wool is also pretty tough and warm, not that warmth is really a major concern for a dog that lives in the house.

There is no need to buy a purpose-made blanket for your dog. You can cut down an old blanket of your own, a metre square is about right. This is big enough for any dog, will fit in a dog basket comfortably and is yet not too big to go in the washing machine every few of months. If you do not want to run to the expense of using a blanket of wool, you could make use of an old towel, as towels are also absorbent.

Most dog owners permit their pets to sleep in the house and some even permit their dog to sleep on the bed. If you allow your dog to sleep in the house, it is best not to give food to him after around six or seven o’clock or you will have to let him out or take him out late at night.

It is better to feed your dog twice a day than just once and be careful of leaving food down all day, especially if there is no-one at home during the day to let him out.

If you make a decision to leave your dog in the garden all day and night, you will have to supply even more refuge for him. A kennel or dog house is the best way of doing this. A kennel should have a wooden floor which is a few inches above the ground.

You could put a couple of inches of straw in the kennel for your dog to make his bed and you can put a blanket or two in there too. Do not worry about what you think it should look like, your dog knows best in these matters. If you can not run to either blankets or towels, believe it or not your dog will be just as pleased with crumpled up sheets of newspaper for bedding. Newspaper is soft, absorbent and surprisingly warm, which is why tramps use it. It is also cheap and easy to replace when it becomes dirty after rainfall.

A dog instinctively tries to make a nest to sleep in. I am certain that you will have noticed that dogs walk around in a circle three times before lying down. This is to flatten the grass before lying down and they do it whether there is grass beneath them or not. If you provide some form of bedding he will not be wasting his time.

Information has always been power and that has not changed. Nowadays people may say that data is power, but the expression means the same. So, if your information or your data is so valuable, how can you keep it private? In other words, how can you safeguard yourself and your savings?

The Internet, viruses, scanners, chips, RFID, credit cards and spyware make the job very difficult, if a criminal wants to get access to your data. Regrettably, it is not good enough to hope that a data thief will not pick on you.

Your bank, your insurance company or the government may give your details to them by leaving them on trains, throwing them in skips or leaving them on hard drives in computers that they later sell secondhand on eBay. It occurs several times a year that we hear about, who knows how many times more?

So, what can you do? Well, there are quite a few things that you can do, but the issue is that most people will not apply them until it is too late, hoping that they will not be a victim of data snooping.

The first thing to do is to endeavour to safeguard your data. That sounds obvious, but how do you go about it?

Let’s start with your written name and address. You could notify your local council that you want to be taken off any lists that they give out to anybody that asks for them. Similarly, you can have your address taken of the junk mail lists and you can have your phone number taken off the junk phone mail list. Ask your local municipality how to do this.

You could buy things with a ‘post restante’ address at your local post office. If necessary, explain why to the firm you are buying from why you are doing that. Or you could have your post redirected from one address to another.

For instance, if you have a lock-up address, use that address, but pay the post office to re-direct your post to where you wake up every day. Another tactic to try is to vary your name. Add in your middle initial, or your full middle name. Add the suffix ‘senior’ or ‘junior’ and keep records. If you get junk mail with these names, you know who to make a complaint to.

You computer probably contains a great deal of sensitive data and you should protect it, not least because some of that data will be the email addresses of your acquaintances and you do not want to introduce them to thieves, do you? Fortunately, this form of protection is comparatively easy.

Make certain that you use a firewall and anti-virus software. Use the best you can afford. The best will cost about $50-60 a year. At $1 a week, it is not worth being mean. You can get free software to do the job and some of it is pretty good, but how many times do you want to pick the wrong one?

Then there is your wallet. RFID tags are installed in most ID cards and credit cards these days and they can be read by the thousands of RFID readers in hotels, hospitals, offices and shops. Think about shielding your wallet, bag or purse or wherever you keep your cards, so that they cannot be read by random RFID readers.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on quite a few topics, but is currently involved with the best RFID printer.

If you have been considering adding a pet ferret to your family, be sure that you are prepared before you actually bring one home. Do your research and make sure that you are fully aware of what you will need to do when your furry friend arrives in your house. These pets can be wonderful, but they can also take up some time. Make sure that you are OK with that and never buy a ferret on an impulse.

A ferret is not really a low maintenance pet. You will need to devote hours of playtime and training if you want your pet to be the best that it can be. These animals have different personalities than the dogs, cats, or birds that people may be used to owning. Not everyone will enjoy owning a ferret.

When you decide to bring a ferret into your home, you must be sure that you are prepared. The most important thing to get is a good quality ferret cage. Some people may try to cut corners on this accessory, but that really is not a good idea. A better quality cage will be a much more secure environment for these curious little creatures.

Something to keep in mind when you get a pet ferret, is that there will be some essential items you will need to purchase. Chief among these is a high quality ferret cage. This will be the place that your ferret will consider it home base. Although you can let your ferret out for playtime, it will spend a large amount of its time crated up. The cage should be big enough that the ferret can move around and get at least a little bit of exercise.

Some ferrets really enjoy sleeping. Many will sleep for long hours on end. The thing to remember though, is that when they wake up, they can be filled with energy and ready to put in some playtime. Experts say that you should really be able to spend at least a good hour or so per day playing with your pet ferret. People who have a problem with this time requirement may want to consider a different type of pet.

If you have room in your heart, you might want to think about passing on the youngest ferrets and consider looking into getting a ferret who has been abandoned. It is a sad fact that far too many people bring home pet ferrets, only to change their mind later, when they realize how much time and work can be involved in keeping these pets. There are ferret rescue shelters available to help serious owners find pets who need some extra love. Experienced owners may want to contact one of these shelters.

Unless you are a qualified breeder, it is always a good idea to get your ferret spayed or neutered. This is more of a necessity with ferrets than with other animals. Left unaltered, ferrets can experience serious health problems. Females especially, will run into problems if they are allowed to mature and go into heat. If you have an unaltered ferret, see your veterinarian as soon as possible and get it fixed.

Something important to keep in mind is that ferrets can have a relatively long lifespan for a pet. During the time that you own him or her, it will need to visit the veterinarian, just as a dog or cat would. Make sure that you have a vet in your area who will deal with small mammals. It may turn out that the nearest vet who will work with you is hours away. Be sure that you are alright with that before you bring your pet home.

If you love reading about ferrets, you may like this other post pertaining to ferret cages and other related issues.

Many gardeners and even commercial crop growers are very satisfied with themselves if they take a step back from using chemical insecticides and revert to using natural, old-fashioned pesticides. And it is true, they have, but did you know that there is yet another step back too? A step backward in time that does not involve spraying of any kind at all.

So, here are a couple of things to try before using natural insecticide.

If you are having trouble with slugs, half bury a few jam jars in your flower beds and pour some beer into them, about two or three inches deep. Slugs do not mind about the quality of the beer. It can be cider, lager or beer; it can be left-overs or flat. Slugs are acutely addicted to beer and they will drink themselves into a stupor, fall into the beer and drown.

Even if there are a dozen deceased slugs in the beer, other slugs will still come and drink from the jar. Empty the jars every day or they start to smell and replenish with beer for that night’s party. You can rapidly reduce your garden’s slug population in this manner.

If you are having trouble with ants of any kind, you could buy a pot of nematodes. These are tiny insects that live in the ground and feed on any insects in the soil that they come across.

Ants and termites are a natural source of food. Nematodes can clear a nest in a week or two. Buy them from a farming or garden centre, mix them with rain water and tip the water over trouble areas.

Natural predators are a very useful means of controlling pest insects. Harmless lizards and snakes are good for this job. However, cats will kill these animals. My neighbour’s two cats have emptied the surrounding gardens of lizards in the last six months alone.

Whereas I used to see lizards hunting every day, I have not seen any for days. This will impinge on our plants unfavorably, so from now on those cats are not welcome in our garden.

Cats will also scare birds from coming into a garden and birds eat hundreds or insects a week each. I still have a lot of birds in the garden, but they only hunt in the rose bushes now where the cats are scared to go.

You can try growing the plants that you would use as natural insecticides in among the plants that you would spray them on. For example, greenfly do not like garlic and some gardeners spray their rose bushes with crushed garlic and water, but you can obtain the same result from growing garlic under your roses. One garlic is not enough, you will have to have half a dozen or more per bush, but what is the problem with that? You can eat or sell the garlic.

Wireworms can be attracted into tin cans and destroyed. Take a large can, put in a layer of vegetable peelings and punch holes in the sides of it with a screw driver. Empty it every few days.

There are many more ways of destroying or repelling pests in the garden without using any kind of pesticide at all, but you will have to look for those yourself.

All dogs need handling differently whilst training them, and training a German Shepherd is considered to be the toughest challenge. The process needed can be learned quite easily and a dog can be very self satisfying.

All dogs are said to be loyal, but the German Shepherd is also loving and very clever. If you are lucky enough to have a well trained one as a pet, you don’t need me to tell you what brilliant pets they make.

A well trained dog always makes a better pet than an untrained animal, and much easier to control. Here are a few suggestions to get to your German Shepherd pup to that stage.

The first thing to remember about this breed is that they will always try and hunt for the alpha dog. They were they originally used to herd sheep and this instinct dates from then.

Being a strong figure of authority to a little puppy may seem hard, but for the training to succeed you need to take on the alpha role. You puppy needs to know who’s boss.

At the same time, only remonstrate them through tone of voice, never hit or smack your puppy. These dogs are extremely sensitive creatures and physical abuse can leave them mentally scarred for life.

Be firm and strong and don’t lose your temper when your puppy is naughty, they all are and you should know that. They will soon learn who is boss if you are firm but fair, a change in your tone of voice will soon be all that your dog needs to know he has gone too far.

All dogs love to be praised, and your German Shepherd will soon know the tones of voice for doing well and doing wrong. Praise is an essential part of training; they will be even keener to please you if they know they will be rewarded in this way. This builds a great rapport between you and your dog.

When an animal joins a family, the word pet no longer seems significant enough. Furry family members are loved as much as any other. In return, they offer endless joy and unconditional love. In spite of all the love and acceptance, there is still a large population of pets who go without the medication they need, or get it too late, every year. Owners don’t intend for this to happen, but in the hectic pace of modern life, the needs of furry and feathered friends often fall sadly to the wayside. Clearly, owners need more helpful options when it comes to managing pet medicine. Growing communications technologies are providing new ways to keep track of pets’ needs.

PC or notebook users can find software to download. In these programs, a layout of columns and rows allow the user to track multiple animals with multiple needs. All of this can be done on a single page, so it is easy to browse and seek out tasks that need completion.

Cell phones are now offering pet organizer applications. All of the animals in a house can be added into the organizer, so there is only one place to check. Pictures can be used to identify each pet and their names can be added as well. One of the best features is the capacity to choose a specific medication by type and even manufacturer. Dosages are tracked and users receive a notification with a sound alarm to remind them when its time to administer a dose.

Social sites also have ways to help manage pet care. Status updates are sent when a task is due. Networking enthusiasts can receive reminders as they go about their usual routine. This is unique, because regular users don’t even have to remind themselves to check the organizer.

There are also helpful software downloads for touch pads that organize pet care. All needs can be tracked on this software, including registration. These programs offer reminders via email. Email reminders can be sent to friends and family, too. Everyone can get involved.

Search engines offer simple personal organizers that don’t have to be downloaded. The interface can be viewed as a daily, weekly, or monthly calendar and offers reminders when a task is drawing near, or an alarm if it becomes overdue.

Those who prefer to organize themselves physically may want to look into the electronic books that are available on any wireless reading device. From file systems to hanging baskets, a variety of smart, creative solutions abound in these texts. It takes no time for them to arrive after an order is placed, because the books are sent electronically.

Appropriate pet care means juggling a lot of different responsibilities. Though the animals of a home are loved as equally as the people within, it is unfortunately true that their needs often slip through the cracks of a hectic lifestyle. Fortunately, communications technology has advanced to the point that several options are now available to help. Whether a pet owner uses a cell phone, a touch pad, a search engine, a PC or laptop, a wireless reading device, or a social networking site, there are organizers available. These options target the most vital care a pet needs, pet medicine. It is easier now than ever before to take good care of animal friends.

The stuff you leave laying around your house could be lethal to the dogs that come around looking for a bite to eat. You might not realize it, but dogs will eat just about anything you leave lying around on the floor or outside. It might not make you think twice, but you need to be careful for the sake of your dog.

Though some people will share their candy and chocolates with their dogs to no harm, dark and baking chocolate are actually really deadly to some dogs.

Onions are another one. What is a great addition to a meal for you or I, can actually turn into poison in the inside of a dog’s body.

Another couple of hazards are to be found in mushrooms and garlic. In particular, garlic can be toxic on the inside of a dog.

Most dogs don’t have a hard time with foods that contain seeds. They may have a little discomfort. But in the case of apple seeds, they can be deadly to your dog.

Chicken bones are another situation that can be deadly if a dog gets ahold of them. Normal bones, like those from cows or pigs, are alright for a dog to chew on. But poultry bones in general are a little bit different. These bones are mostly hollow and can shatter in a dog’s mouth leaving protruding points that can become trapped on a dog’s insides.

A dog is liable to eat just about anything it can get its mouth around. That doesn’t mean that you should let it. Keep your trash up and out of the dog’s way. Also, you should do the same thing with your own food to keep it away from your dog.

Keep your dog safe. Keep the trash and junk out of the way. It doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to avoid deadly repercussions for your or somebody else’s canine companion.

If your kids keep going on at you to get a little puppy for them to look after it may be advisable for you to know a little bit more about puppies, other than the fact that they are cute and wag their tail a lot.

It is important to know something about puppies or in fact any type of pet before getting one to look after.

If the dog was living out in the wild like its cousin who just happens to be a wolf. The dog would always go around in groups or packs as they are known. Each pack would have 1 leader known as the alpha male or in this case the alpha dog.

The domesticated dog is no different in the respect that it will look after its family, or pack and its territory.

You may be the male of the household, but if it is not you that looks after your dog all the time then the dog will not consider you as the alpha male. The dog will give that role to the person that socializes with it the most and looks after it.

If your kids tend to look after the dog all the time then it will consider one of those the alpha male. The same can be said of its territory. If the dog thinks that the home is its territory then it is natural to assume that it will bark when a stranger approaches the house.

Marking their territory is another thing a dog does often. To mark a territory the dog urinates to leave its own smell so that other dogs know it is theirs. A strange but true fact is a dog can even tell by smelling the urine whether the territory belongs to a big dog or small dog. If a dog finds that the territory belongs to a smaller dog it can urinate over the top and claim the territory as its own.

If your dog has strayed onto another dog’s territory then try to get it away from there before there is any trouble with a rival dog.

Aside from pet tips, the author additionally frequently publishes information on the surround sound stereos and car subwoofers.
