All dogs need handling differently whilst training them, and training a German Shepherd is considered to be the toughest challenge. The process needed can be learned quite easily and a dog can be very self satisfying.

All dogs are said to be loyal, but the German Shepherd is also loving and very clever. If you are lucky enough to have a well trained one as a pet, you don’t need me to tell you what brilliant pets they make.

A well trained dog always makes a better pet than an untrained animal, and much easier to control. Here are a few suggestions to get to your German Shepherd pup to that stage.

The first thing to remember about this breed is that they will always try and hunt for the alpha dog. They were they originally used to herd sheep and this instinct dates from then.

Being a strong figure of authority to a little puppy may seem hard, but for the training to succeed you need to take on the alpha role. You puppy needs to know who’s boss.

At the same time, only remonstrate them through tone of voice, never hit or smack your puppy. These dogs are extremely sensitive creatures and physical abuse can leave them mentally scarred for life.

Be firm and strong and don’t lose your temper when your puppy is naughty, they all are and you should know that. They will soon learn who is boss if you are firm but fair, a change in your tone of voice will soon be all that your dog needs to know he has gone too far.

All dogs love to be praised, and your German Shepherd will soon know the tones of voice for doing well and doing wrong. Praise is an essential part of training; they will be even keener to please you if they know they will be rewarded in this way. This builds a great rapport between you and your dog.

Everybody has lived with ants in the house or and the garden all his or her life. Wherever people live, ants live too, except in Antartica and a few islands, but how much do you really know about them?

Ants evolved from wasps about 120 million years ago and later, as plant life started to diversify, ants diversified and specialized as well. We do not know how many varieties of ants there are, but it is estimated that there are about 22,000. Of those, 12,500 odd have been classified, so there is still a great deal that we do not know about ants.

In spite of the large number of species they all have a distinctive shape: a node-like formation with a very slender, wasp-like waist. Ants are insects and they live in nests from a few dozen to many million individuals. The majority of these individuals are sterile female workers and soldiers.

There are also a few males, called drones, for reproduction purposes and one or more reproductive, egg-laying queens. There will also be a back-up group of reproductive females who can turn into workers or queens as the nest requires.

Ants are capable of working together to resolve pretty complicated social or environmental problems and they have been a source of inspiration to human societies for generations.

Termites are frequently called ‘white ants’, but in fact they are not at all connected to ants. They are more closely related to cockroaches. The fact that termites and ants share a number of characteristics is ascribed to convergent evolution.

Ants are extremely successful creatures. They make up about twenty percent of the entire land-based biomass and that is greater than the biomass of vertebrates. Most ants will eat anything although some species have specialized. There is a huge disparity in size. Some species are only three-quarters of a millimetre long whereas others are fifty-two millimetres in length, which is two inches long!

Ants have jointed antennae unlike most other insects and the majority of of them have rather poor eyesight, some are even blind, but definitely not all. Some ants have superb vision. They do not respire as we do, but gases passes through their exoskeleton (hard external skin) by means of valves. They do not have a heart as such either but they do have nerves. Some ants, such as the fire ant, have stings like their ancient ancestors the wasps.

Ants come from eggs, but the eggs do not have to be fertilized: fertilized eggs turn out to be female and unfertilized develop into male. Ant nurse workers can affect which caste of ant an egg will produce by the kind of food it gives it. Ant eggs need a constant temperature, so nurse workers will often move the eggs from chamber to chamber to keep it perfect.

When an ant hatches out, it is given easy tasks like tending the queen and the eggs for a few days and then it is moved on to digging and cleaning the nest. The ants that go out looking for food are the older ants. It is reckoned that they are given this work because it is hazardous and they will more than likely die of natural causes soon anyway.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on many topics, but is at present concerned with how to kill fire ants.

Are you thinking about putting a koi carp pond in your garden? A koi fish pond is a great improvement to any garden. A garden pond is totally relaxing: watching the fish going about their every day lives is relaxing and listening to the sound of the water moving is relaxing too. Koi carp are a decent choice over some other fish because they grow fairly large and breed freely even in captivity.

They are not that difficult to take care of either. As with all fish ponds, you need to maintain the quality of the water, but that is not so much of a problem if you know what you are doing. When you have got the water correct, the rest will follow more or less automatically, although you will have to check it frequently.

Having said that, you ought to not only hurry out in to the garden, dig a hole and fill it with fish. You need to buff up on the subject first, but there is so much information on koi on the market, that you will have no problem in that regard. There is also plenty of knowledge on the Net.

The first thing to do is dig a hole for your pond, but it better not to have it consistently deep. It should be three or four feet deep at one end and a foot or so deep at the other. The koi will overwinter and sleep in the deeper water, but only the fry will feel comfortable in the shallow end. They will take refuge there to avoid being eaten by the larger fish. Like most fish, koi are cannibals.

Once your pond has been dug out, fill it with water and leave it for a week. Use this week to test your water features such as the water pumps, the filter and the fountain. If you are losing water strive to plug the leak. If you have to keep topping up the water level from the hosepipe, you will probably run into hardship with chlorine.

After a week, the chlorine in that tap water will have dissipated and any surplus oil in your pond apparatus will have been flushed out, so you can put aquatic plants in. Plant them in pots so that you can move them easily if necessary. You should also construct some underwater caves for the fish to hide in.

When you are satisfied that everything is working well and that the environment is stable (this is easier to do in larger ponds), you can think of purchasing some koi.

You have to decide why you would like to have koi. Do you want to show them and possibly earn some money? In that case you will have to start with expensive fish, but if you just want to sit and watch them, the cheapest ones are all right. You can probably ask a friend to give you a dozen anyway.

If you procure your fish in the breeding season, you will probably get a couple of gravid (pregnant) females anyway.

A word of warning: fish normalize their environment better than we do. A given amount of water will only hold a precise number of inches of fish. So, as an example, say that each ten gallons of water will be sufficient for ten inches of fish and you have 200 gallons that is 200 inches of fish, which is 20 x 10 inch fish or 40 x 5 inch fish. As the fish grow, they will die to maintain this ratio, so do not purchase too many until you are familiar with the ratio.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many topics, but is at present involved with finding a koi pond contractor.
Have you come to the conclusion that you want an air purifier for your home? You may think it is a good idea if the air in your home is 'unclean' in any way or even if it is damp and mildewy. There are many reasons why a home and its residents can benefit from an air purifier especially if you live on a main road or near a factory. Too many hairy pets can also be a cause of allergies which can be cleaned up by the use of an air purifier. Continue reading →

Have you come to the conclusion that you want an air purifier for your home? You may think it is a good idea if the air in your home is ‘unclean’ in any way or even if it is damp and mildewy. There are many reasons why a home and its residents can benefit from an air purifier especially if you live on a main road or near a factory. Too many hairy pets can also be a cause of allergies which can be cleaned up by the use of an air purifier.

If you do make a decision to buy one, there are several different sorts to choose from and various price levels. You can also shop on or off line. In fact, the cost of these devices is often lower on line because the seller does not have the overheads of a bricks and mortar shop front, although you will have to remember to add postage and package and any local taxes that might be appropriate. It is still usually cheaper to buy on line rather than in the shopping mall.

However, both methods of shopping have their advantages and disadvantages, so we will take a closer look at these next. Really what you need to do is compare both methods of shopping and see which is best for you. The way that I do that is by going on line and typing something like ‘air purifiers for sale’ into a search engine.

The results that come up will be many, almost certainly well over 100,000, so choose a dozen or so and do some research. Amazon is usually a decent place to read users’ reviews. Make notes on brand names, prices, features and capabilities. Then take these notes to the Mall and go searching for air purifiers.

With your newly found information of these devices, you can question sales personnel and compare prices. Write more notes and do some comparisons.

Do not forget to add postage and packing and local taxes to the on line prices. Another item that you should take into account is the warranty. What happens if the purifier breaks down? Will you have to send it hundreds of miles away to get repaired? Who will stump up for that?

It is always easier to claim on a warranty if it can be done locally. However, what are the chances of it breaking down anyway? It depends on the length of the guarantee actually.

Some of the functions that you should come across whilst researching your prospective air purifier are whether it uses an air filter or not, whether it can cool air or not and whether it can dehumidify or not. These three features are convenient for different conditions, but there is no point paying for something that you will never use – the dehumidifier for instance.

Some individuals prefer a machine that does not need an air filter or which has a washable filter, but this is normally because of laziness and false economy. There are many different kinds of filters for different pollutants so they are more flexible and ultimately far better.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with central air conditioner prices.

There are over 1,000 species of carpenter ants. The majority of of them are large, between a quarter of an inch and an inch long, and black, although there are red ones as well. There are even a few sorts in South East Asia which will explode if threatened, squirting a sticky substance out through their heads which immobilizes the attackers. The exploding carpenter ant dies.

Carpenter ants are said to do a lot of damage to timber, as they gnaw their way up the middle through its length. However, this is a popular myth, unlike termites, carpenters do not eat wood, they gnaw their way through it to get somewhere. They spit the chewed wood out. This is called frass and it can often be seen in heaps like sawdust. It is a good sign that carpenters are active in or around your house.

Carpenter ants like to travel through the length of damp or decayed dead timber in much the same way as termites do although they do not consume the timber. Carpenters feed on dead insects, dead animals and honeydew from aphids and scale insects outside the home, but if they come inside your home they will be searching for dropped or uncovered food, especially anything sweet and sugary. Therefore, cleanliness is an important factor of clearing carpenters out of your house.

These ants will walk as fae as a hundred yards while looking for food, but they like to be near a regular source of food. A feature of carpenter ant colonies is that they may construct satellite nests away from their main colony. This is frequently why they go into a home.

If they regularly find spilled food in the kitchen, they may make a nest in the wall to take advantage of it, particularly if the window or door frame is a bit decayed. Inside the home, they will probably nest in a cavity wall, outside the home they prefer to construct nests in decaying tree stumps.

It is no good spraying carpenter ants with pesticide if you want to get rid of them – especially if you kill large quantities of them. This may sound odd, but the reason is that the colony will miss these workers and so the queen will bump up her production of eggs to compensate it. If she over compensates, you are in a worse situation that you were before spraying.

The only way to wipe out a nest of carpenter ants is to destroy the queen and the whole colony with poison. This is not difficult although it does take a bit of investigative work. Carpenters are most active between twilight and midnight, so put out honey on glass or sticky tape where they are active and follow them when they take it home.

Do not forget, they may have a number of nests in their colony. If you need light, wrap red cellophane over a normal flashlight, because ants can not perceive red light. When you have found their nests, put poison down outside each nest as directed on the label. Do this for several days in a row until you do not see anymore carpenter ants. If you are still getting them, you have missed a nest.

There are also ant farms to match. Some ant farms are like very slim fish tanks. These are suitable for any of the subterranean ant varieties. However, there are also ant farms that are shaped like giant eggs but with a flat bottom. The conical top allows ants to make an anthill.

Some ant farm manufacturers include ants in the package, but others do not. If you have set up your ant farm and filled it with earth or sand, the next stage is to get your ants. But how do you buy ants?

Well, there are ant dealers. That surprises most people. There are actually people who specialize in the sale of ant colonies for ant farms. You can locate one of these on the Internet. Try to use the closest ant dealer to you in order to save the ants trauma from long-distance travel. It is worth using a respectable ant dealer, because you will have more chance of receiving ants that will live long enough to establish an active, vibrant nest.

Before choosing an ant dealer, verify the dealer’s past reputation. Search for testimonials and also look for complaints. You can do this by typing the firm’s name and the word ‘complaints’ into Google. Any difficulties with the dealer should become evident quite quickly

Unfortunately, sometimes people receive dead ants even from trustworthy dealers, the issue is how the ant dealer deals with the problem.

The best businesses will guarantee that you receive your ants alive. These are the best ant dealers to do business with. Very often the conditions of the business deal are that if the ants are dead on arrival, they should be returned to the dealer, who will then issue a new colony.

Or perhaps the company will offer you a voluntary insurance that the ants will arrive alive or be replaced free of charge. If he does, it is worth taking the insurance up, if you can not find a dealer with a free guarantee

Some ant dealers have shipping policies and to be honest, they all should have them. One of the most frequent stipulations is that they will not dispatch the ants if the prevalent temperature is above 25c (80f) or below freezing.

Remember, that if your ants are delivered on a cold day, they could not be dead or dying, they may just be languid because it is cold. It is pretty normal for cold-blooded animals such as ants to become semi-dormant when the temperature drops below a certain level. To confirm whether this is their difficulty, allow them to warm up slowly in the warmth of a typical living room. If they do not ‘come back to life’ after fifteen minutes in a warm room, you have a dispute.

There are several different types of water well and so some of the water well drilling equipment necessary to produce them will vary too. However, one piece of equipment that you will always have to have is a means of getting the water out of the well and this can vary from a bucket on a rope to an avant-garde solar powered water pump.

Some types of well are dug out by hand with shovels as they were for thousands of years and others are drilled out with powerful, large rotary drills as are used in the oil industry. Here follows the main types of water well:

A water well that is termed a ‘dug well’ is exactly that: a well that has been excavated by hand with a pick and shovel. It is the same kind of water well that existed in Biblical times and before and the equipment used to create it has not changed either. The only change is the quality of the tools – it has increased inestimably over the last 2,000 years.

These wells look like the wishing wells famous from farm houses and fairy stories with a bucket wound up and down on a rope by means of a winding-handle. They normally have a small roof to inhibit things from falling into the water also. These wells most often exist in warmer, poorer countries and they are often brought into the 21st Century by the addition of a solar powered water pump.

These water wells are often dressed in stone to stop dust and soil from falling into the water. It also cuts down on long term repairs, because you do not have to keep digging out the well to clear it of soil that has fallen into it.

A much narrower diameter well can be created by drilling. The water well drilling equipment required is not complicated, but you will have to have a heavy-duty power source such as a generator, because you may need to drill through rock.

This technique of drilling is similar to that used in the oil industry. A drill bit is attached to a pipe which is first hammered into the ground to give it a bite and then rotated like a drill.

You have to keep drilling by adding extra pipes until you strike water. Then the drill is extracted from the well and a water channel is inserted in its place. A solar pump can be added to this pipe to provide water.

A similar technique of drilling a well employs water well drilling equipment that is similar to that used for pile-driving. A point is hammered into the ground by a very heavy weight. Every time the weight falls, the bit rotates a little. It is slow and old-fashioned, but it has got the job done for hundreds of years and still does.

The drill bit has to be pulled out often to remove the debris. When water has been struck, the water well drilling equipment is extracted and a pipe is fed down the hole. Once again a pump may be installed to bring up the water. A solar powered pump is the way that most people tend to go.

When people who keep fish talk of how to keep your pond in good condition, they take it for granted that everyone realizes that it is synonymous with how to keep the water in your fish pond in decent condition, because the water to fish is like air is to us and everything depends upon it. We cannot be healthy if we are breathing smut, smog and pollution and nor can fish.

So, if you keep the water decontaminated, the fish will be glad and probably breed and the plants will be happy and almost certainly propagate and healthy plants will do their own bit to help keep the water decontaminated. However, you have to get the ball rolling, before others can help keep it rolling and your biggest task here is to get the pond’s water filtration system correct from the start.

You need to set up two types of filtration. The first is an easy mechanical filter that blocks algae, dead plants, leaves and faeces as the water is pumped through it and the second filter is a biological filter that dissolves unseen waste from your pond.

This produces a nitrogen cycle and the danger here is that the nitrogen will change into ammonia which will kill your fish very quickly. A easy test is the clarity of the water. It ought to be clear enough for you to see the bottom easily and there ought to be no floating debris in there. No lumps of sticky weed or clogs of bubbling vegetation.

Overfeeding is a trap that lots of greenhorn pond-owners fall into. You have to feed your fish high quality food, depending on what they are, but do not forget that they will get some wild, fresh meat too. Insects will fall in and mosquitoes will try to breed in there and all will get eaten by your fish, so do not become alarmed if they do not appear to be eating much.

An surplus of store-bought fish food will cause the water to go cloudy and algae to grow. If you would like to increase the proportion of wild game in their diet, put a small night light at the edge of the pool and see how many hundred insects fall into the water to turn into fish food.

Keep an eye on your plants as well as on your fish. If your plants are dying or rotting, take them out and enquire of an expert the likely cause. It might simply be that they are the wrong sort of plants for your pond or it maybe more serious like the pH value of the water. These are problems that are easily fixed, once you are aware of them.

The last thing to be certain of is aeration. Your pond water should contain oxygen just as our air should contain oxygen as well. This is also easily achieved. Buy a good pond pump with a filtered intake and two outlets: one for the mechanical filter and one for a fountain. The water falling back to the pond will become rich in oxygen and you should not have any concerns about the quality of the water in your fish pond.

Ants are cold-blooded animals which means that they cannot keep themselves warm. If their surroundings are cold, they go into a very lazy way of life and practically hibernate, whereas when it is warm they run about the garden looking for food to take home to the nest. The weather of the country that they live in along with its seasons determines which species of ants can live there and how they will act and when.

Therefore, in the temperate climates of the north. you rarely see ants in the winter, whereas in the tropics they are active all year round. This is just perfect for the ants that live in those locations.

When you take ants out of their natural surroundings, bring them indoors and make them live in a box, usually known as an ant farm, you have to regulate the ants’ temperature and their food. If you have a local kind of ant, the temperature is not a problem. It is much the same as with tropical fish.

Whenever, you create an artificial home for an animal, you have to produce an environment that it can live in, you cannot require that creature to adjust to what you can provide although some can adapt a little. Likewise, ants know what they like to eat, so if you have an ant farm you must give them what they like to eat, not what you think is good for them.

Fortunately, ants have quite a varied diet. However, there are also foods that they like, but which they should not eat and, just like with us, the main one of those is sticky, sugary things. They make us fat and rot our teeth and maybe they do with ants too, but the main reason is that they find it tricky to take home. If the workers cannot carry enough food home, then the colony will suffer.

It is a good idea to put the food in one spot as well. Not because otherwise they will not be able to find it, but because you might not. If you over feed your ants the surplus will be left to rot. You do not want rotting, smelly mildewy food on your farm. It looks bad, smells bad and may infect the ants with mildew, yeast or mould illnesses. So, if the food stays uneaten after two days, you should remove it; wait twenty-four hours and then set more down.

Most ant farms contain harvester ants, but you ought to check. Harvester ants like crunchy food. They can cut it easily, carry it home easily and digest it easily too. This means vegetables like celery, carrots and lettuce (but try others as well) and some fruits.

You will have to judge what they eat and how much. It depends on the size of the colony, so start with a few grammes and see how it pans out. A half a teaspoon of water a day is useful for them too, but do not make a puddle. The ground ought to remain dry.

Ants appear to be quite innocuous to a lot of people. In most temperate climates, ants do very little damage, although red ants bite people all over the planet. However, there are more serious ants in warmer countries and some of these ants can even be the cause of for hospitalzations and even a few fatalities. Red ant bites itch and even hurt, but picture a baby falling onto a red ant nest.

What if that infant fell onto a fire ant nest or a red carpenter ant nest? Carpenter ants can be an inch (25 mm) long and a bite can extract blood. There are venomous ants in South America and exploding ants in Southeast Asia, although they will not kill humans. Soldier ants are pretty frightening too. In fact, the amount of dangerous ants in the warmer countries can be worrying.

Indeed, only a fortnight ago, my male dog was plastered in big red marks all over his stomach and under carriage. He was obviously in great pain when he walked and was off his food. It has been very hot here in Thailand this summer because the monsoon was late, so he probably dug a shallow hole in the soil to keep cool. He was probably swarmed by ants while he was asleep, but could not shake them off. He was in a very bad way for three days.

Some ants are vegetarians but others will gladly eat meat, if it is available. Most ants will eat dead insects and small, dead animals. Some will also assault fit animals, including humans, if they feel threatened.

One trouble is that insects can become resistant to chemical controls and sometimes this immunity is localized, so it is better not to use chemicals if you can help it. Chemicals can also present a hazard to children, which makes storing them and using them even more dangerous.

Boric acid is a by-product of boron which is a natural product. Boric acid is extremely good at destroying insects that take food back to their colonies, so this includes ants and termites. It can be mixed with sugar and water to make it more appealing to ants or can be spread around the garden with no danger. It is risk-free to children and pets alike.

Cayenne pepper is another repellent-cum-killer. Cultivate your own cayenne peppers, liquidize them and add to boiling water, then spray over ants and ant runs when it has chilled. It will not kill a colony, but it will stop foraging ants.

Corn meal is a way of ant and cockroach control. Spread it about and when the insects consume it, it will expand up with their digestive juices and cause them to blow up. Not very nice, but satisfying all the same.

There are other biological remedies for destroying or deterring insects too, some are favourites of one country or local people. Why don’t you ask around the older people where you live and find out what their parents used to make use of to control ants and other insects the natural way?
