Overfeeding your pet can do it some serious harm, possibly contributing to major long-term health problems. Issues such as diabetes, heart problems and complications with internal organs and muscular dysfunction are all things that dogs in particular can be prone to.

If you think your pet might be overweight, there are some things you can do in order to get him back on track to being fit and healthy.

The most obvious place to start is with their food – you need to start feeding them less, but to do this in a gradual way. So, begin by feeding them less each day by around 1/10th – this way, you won’t risk underfeeding them.

The next thing to think about is exercise, and ways in which you can let your dog get the most out of the daily walk. If you’re near to a large park or other open area, then take a toy or two and let the dog off the lead so that you can throw things for them to fetch. Alternatively, just extend you walk a little so that your dog gets a really long walk every day.

Lastly, be thoughtful when it comes to the type and quality of the food that you feed your pet – no scraps off dinner plates! Keep a mental note of treats that you give your dog and check these against the daily food allowance – balance needs to be strictly maintained if they are to stay healthy.

If your dog always seems to be hungry, even when you’re feeding him a complete dry diet, then here’s a tip you can use to help him feel more full. Simply add some water to his bowl of food – about 1 part liquid to 2 parts food – and the food will swell up, filling more space in his stomach.

If your dog gobbles his food, consider getting them a special bowl with a raised centre. This encourages them to eat around the edges and prevents them from eating as quickly.

Overall, they need a combination of enough exercise and the right amount of food to stay healthy. If these factors are out of balance, then they may put on weight.

If worst comes to worst and your pet is badly overweight, the most important thing to do is to go and see a vet in order to find a resolution.

The main thing is to make sure that you are feeding your pet great quality food tailored for them. Specially designed puppy food, dry dog food and other diets can help your dog live a long, happy and healthy life.

We love our dogs, if you treat them right then they are as true a friend as you could ever hope for, but they need our help to look after them if we want them to stay healthy and happy. Since we have domesticated dogs and taken them out of their natural habitat then we have taken away their natural ability to look after themselves and surrounded them with new dangers they are not used to, so it is up to us to help them avoid those new dangers. Below we discuss 5 ways to look after your dog:

Keep dangerous items out of reach: In many ways then dogs are like children, they are naturally curious and they don’t understand how dangerous different things can be until it is too late. How can your innocent dog know that the bleach bottle it is biting into is going to hurt it? Or that eating your small ornaments could cause it to choke? Instead keep all small things your dog could eat or anything sharp or dangerous liquids etc out of reach like you would do with a young child.

Regular grooming: Grooming is not just about making your dog look good, it is also an important part of their care. When you bathe your dog then you remove dirt and parasites that can cause problems later, especially if it causes them to scratch which opens up a wound that can get infected. When you brush your dog then you are not just removing dead hair, you should also be checking over your dog for anything that might be wrong, rashes or scratches etc, that you can catch before they get worse.

Look after their teeth: There is nothing more painful than a toothache, so you want to make sure your dog avoids that pain if they can, by helping them look after their teeth. You want to inspect their teeth regularly to make sure they look ok, and use special dog toothpaste and a finger brush to clean their teeth regularly too. You can also get special dog chews that are made to clean their teeth as they chew on them, you could get some of them for the times in-between when you brush.

Stop giving them scraps: Dogs like to beg for food, and unfortunately we love them so much that we end up giving them scraps from our dinner, but most of the time it is not good for them. You might think you are being cruel giving them that nasty looking dog food, but the dog food is specially made for their systems so they can digest it and get the nutrients they need out of it. Our human food can often hurt them, things like chocolate and garlic powder can actually poison and kill your dog, and they are in all sorts of different items you might feed to your dog. So as harsh as it may seem them teach them not to beg at the table and to only eat their dog food, then get them some special dog treats for when you want to spoil them.

Regular exercise: Just like us, then dogs need exercise to stay healthy. If they were out in the wild then they would get all the exercise they could handle as they went about their daily lives, but as we keep them in our houses then we need to make sure they are being active enough. You don’t necessarily need to walk with them to give them exercise though, you could sit down on a bench and then throw a ball for them, they will happily chase after it and tire themselves out while you sit and relax!

If your dog keeps chewing up his/her bed, then have a look at an indestructible dog bed instead, we show you the best ones at IndestructibleDogBeds.com.

Assuming that you are a pet owner and that you probably own either a cat or a dog (as that is what most pet owners do) I am not going to teach you something that you do not know but rather bring your attention to something that you might have forgotten.

* Amount of exercise: Both cats and dogs need physical activity. Movement is vital to any pet and the larger pet the more exercise is needed. That is why dogs will often require more exercise than cats.

* Exercise type: Most cats will want to stay outside and as long as you let it do that itll do the necessary physical activity that it needs. For dogs you need to take them for longer walk once, twice or even three times a day. If you can take them for a swim occasionally that would be beneficial as well.

* Nutrition amount: I know you want to do what best for your pet and spoiling them by giving them all they can eat will not benefit them at all. They will get fat and the excess fat will harm their health condition.

* Proper nutrition: Make sure to provide your pet with healthy organic foods. If youre in doubt what would be right for your particular pet be sure to ask your VET. Dont guess and end up making vital mistakes.

* Love: Just like humans a pet will need love from you and from anyone else in your family. Without love a pet will lose the will to live just like a human would. Talk to your pet daily using happy words and make sure to keep a physical contact as well.

* Insure your pet: Every day thousands of pets get hurt by cars and there is nothing we can do about it. But instead of hoping that it’ll never happen to your pet be sure to get an good pet health insurance that will cover everything if bad luck strikes.

* Keep a schedule: To make things easy on yourself be sure to use some kind of schedule. Feeding your pet should be obvious but things like medical checks and vaccinations might not be. For an optimal health condition of your pet youll need to remember these things as well.

For an avid dog-lover, the loss of his pet is the single most traumatic experience. If this occurs due to an illness, it becomes even more tragic. Kidney disease is one such killer. It can manifest itself in two ways. One is acute kidney disease and the other is chronic kidney disease. The former strikes suddenly whereas the latter takes effect over a period of time. Either way, the result if fatal for the canine and heartbreaking for the owner.

This disease causes a loss of approximately seventy percent of normal kidney function and it is these organs that act as the body’s filtration system. If these do not work properly, toxins and waste products slowly build up in the blood. This can lead to a variety of problems, and sadly, eventual death. This unfortunately is the harsh reality of canine kidney disease.

As the toxins start building up in various organs, they start to ‘shut down’ that organ. The owner can notice the apparent symptoms in such cases. The kidney disease hinders the body from functioning properly and the warning signals become more obvious. The signs can vary between the two types of kidney disease. Sudden dehydration is a sign of acute kidney disease. If you gently pull the skin of the stomach on your pet and it doesn’t spring back, then it could be that he or she is dehydrated.

Another telltale sign of the acute kidney disease is the extreme reduction or total stoppage of urine. Your dog would suddenly stop urinating. It is a very excruciating process as the kidneys become quite painful. This is the most obvious sign. You would notice your pet’s arched back or stiff leg movement. In such a case, you would need to rush your precious pet to a veterinarian immediately.

There are different symptoms shown with chronic kidney disease. Where they would usually gulp food they may begin to show signs of a decrease in appetite so drastic they do not want to eat. They could even stop eating all together. Weight loss will occur in time. An increase in thirst and the amount of water they drink will increase which is one of the first warning signs that the disease has begun. This signs are common with the condition. There may be an increase in the frequency of urination as the dog can lose bladder control. In some cases urination can become painful and often impossible with blood showing up in the urine. Any signs of urine symptoms, vomiting, lethargic or depressed in your pet should be treated as a warning sign and you should call your vet immediately since canine kidney disease is serious and can be deadly. It could be possible to get control over the disease if it is caught soon enough.

Kidney disease in dogs is serious and if the veterinarian suspects this he will normally follow four steps to determine if the dog has the disease or not. Firstly he will conduct a thorough physical examination. Secondly he will speak to the owner about their dog’s relevant history, regarding symptoms and behavior at home. After completing the first two steps he will conduct two steps, a blood test and urinary test. Both of these are necessary as to do one without the other will give a less certain diagnosis. Both of these tests will confirm whether your dog has the acute form or chronic kidney disease.

Veterinary medicine has limited answers for treating kidney failure in dogs, but there are natural alternatives that can even reverse canine kidney failure.

The relationships we share with our pets are often irreplaceable. Their companionship and constant presence can be both soothing and invigorating. Unfortunately, pets suffer health issues and occasionally require costly medical attention in the same way people do. When an emergency occurs and it becomes necessary to visit the veterinarian, many owners are stunned by the costs of performing tests and procedures. If they are unable to afford it, the alternative can be heartbreaking. Pet insurance was created to provide owners with an alternative.

Today’s article will focus on how this unique breed of coverage works. We’ll describe what you can expect after investing in a policy for your dog and how it can reduce the costs of veterinary care.

How It Can Reduce Veterinary Costs

Medical care for canines has come a long way over the past 20 years. Many procedures that are common today were not even possible a few decades ago. As a result, dogs can live longer, healthier lives and receive treatment for a variety of illnesses and disorders that would otherwise have deadly consequences. Of course, as with medical attention for people, the costs of veterinary care have skyrocketed.

For example, a condition called “bloat” (also referred to as gastric torsion) might cost more than $5,000 to treat. Because the condition is life-threatening, an owner who cannot afford treatment may be forced to euthanize his canine. Even a relatively minor leg fracture can cost several hundreds of dollars to set.

To be sure, performing tests and providing treatment for your pooch can be expensive. That is the reasons dog health insurance was created. It allows owners to invest in a policy that helps allay the high costs of veterinary treatment. If your dog becomes sick or is injured, the policy covers the expense.

It works in a similar manner as your health insurance policy. When you visit your veterinarian, he or she will present you with a bill covering the procedures that were performed on your canine. After you pay the bill, you would file a claim with your pet insurance provider. Your provider would then review your claim and send you a check to reimburse you for the treatment provided by the veterinarian.

Is It The Right Decision For You?

Only you can know whether your budget is able to accommodate the premiums attached to a dog health insurance policy. In truth, the premiums are usually slight, especially when compared to the amount of coverage a policy offers. Given that a large portion of veterinary care is attributed to unexpected circumstances (i.e. injuries, sudden onset of illness, etc.), it’s an investment that every owner should at least consider.

The worst possible scenario is to find yourself in a situation that forces you to choose between absorbing a significant veterinarian bill or allowing your pooch to perish. A dog health insurance policy can help you avoid that tragic circumstance.
