Bank Barns- These got their name from the way they were constructed in hillsides. The hill enabled multiple entrances to be had to the barn. The lower part was used for animals and the upper was for threshing and storage. Food for the animals could easily be dropped off as the wagon backed up to the top portion of the barn. There was also usually a hatch in the upper floor that allowed for food to be dropped to the animals below.
The hay is stored above the cribs, leaving plenty of room for animals below. The wood shingles that were on top of these barns have since been replaced with tin roofs or asphalt shingles. Traditionally, unchinked logs were used and vertical wooden slats were placed on the outside.
Prairie Barns- These are also known as Western barns and are often used by ranchers with large herds of cattle. The way the peaked roof is positioned above the outside hayloft opening is the way most people recognize these barns. The large upper loft provides plenty of area for hay to be stored. This upper portion of the barn angles towards the ground, as the roof extends well past the regular stopping point of most barns.
Bank Barns- The hillside, or bank, into which these barns are built is how their name was derived. The reason for the hillside construction is so that there were multiple entrances for the barn. The wagons could pull to the side that was level with the hill, allowing for them to easily drop off hay into the upper storage portion of the barn. The lower part of the barn had doors on the side that wasn’t in the hill, for easy access for the animals. Feeding time was made simpler for farmers by the hatch in the upper floor where hay was.
